The Evolution of BasedApp

Phase 1: The Early BasedApp

The initial version of BasedApp was designed as a smart contract wallet directly linked to a Visa Debit Card — a pioneering product at the time. Leveraging account abstraction (AA) technology, it offered advanced features such as social login, gasless transactions, batched operations, and automation (e.g., recurring buys). These features aimed to simplify the crypto experience while enabling practical everyday use. Our integration was even highlighted in a technical breakdown by Gelato.

With BasedApp, users could hold stablecoins or cryptocurrencies in their smart contract wallet and spend them anywhere Visa was accepted — eliminating the need for complex off-ramping processes. This not only made stablecoins feel more familiar to everyday users but also resolved a critical issue for experienced crypto participants: access to real-world liquidity.

Our platform resonated with users, especially during the post-FTX era, when off-ramping from crypto to fiat became increasingly difficult due to bank de-risking. BasedApp enabled seamless spending of on-chain assets, bypassing traditional financial obstacles. Over time, the platform grew to support thousands of active users and processed over eight figures in payment volume across a global user base.

In 2023, we applied for a crypto license in Singapore. BasedApp is now recognized as an exempted entity under the Payment Services Act, allowing us to operate legally out of our Singapore headquarters.

While the first version successfully addressed key pain points, it also presented limitations. We had focused heavily on creating a generalized wallet solution, without clearly defining the primary use cases users wanted. In addition, operating across multiple chains introduced performance and cost inefficiencies. Through extensive user feedback, we identified a clearer path forward.

Phase 2: Introducing the Based HyperApp

Spend, Trade, and Hold — All in One App

Through ongoing conversations with our users, we identified the three most critical actions they want from a crypto app:

  1. Hold – Secure self-custody of crypto assets

  2. Trade – Buy and sell major tokens like BTC and ETH

  3. Spend – Use crypto for real-world transactions, including fiat on/off-ramps

This insight led to the development of the Based HyperApp — a mobile-first operating system for on-chain finance. The HyperApp combines the benefits of self-custody with the fluid user experience of centralized exchanges such as Coinbase, Binance, and Bybit.

HyperApp Core Features (Launch Version)

  • Spot Trading: Buy and sell tokens like BTC, ETH, and SOL, with full self-custody via BasedApp’s integrated wallet

  • Perpetuals Trading: High-performance trading interface with native mobile UX, push notifications for order fills and liquidations

  • Visa Debit Card Integration: Spend crypto directly from the app at any Visa-accepting merchant

  • Portfolio Tracker: Unified dashboard for tracking balances across Spot, Perps, EVM wallets, staking, and fiat (cash) accounts

Upcoming Features

  • Global On-/Off-Ramps: Expanded fiat channels through HyperCore, HyperEVM, and EVM chains (subject to regional availability)

  • On-Chain Treasury: Establishing a HYPE-denominated treasury funded by platform revenues

  • HIP-3 Activation: Using the treasury to activate HIP-3 and bootstrap synthetic USD mechanisms

  • Synthetic USD: A yield-bearing, delta-neutral stable asset backed by arbitrage and DAO treasury yield

Our long-term vision is to make BasedApp the premier gateway for Hyperliquid and a global hub for crypto finance.

Mobile-First User Experience

BasedApp will be available for both Android and iOS. Users can get started in two ways:

  • Create a New Wallet: Sign up using email or Google to generate a non-custodial wallet, enabling full access to all BasedApp and Hyperliquid features

  • Connect an Existing Wallet: Link an existing wallet via the “Connect Mobile” function. While BasedApp can place trades, it cannot access or withdraw user funds.

Importantly, BasedApp is non-custodial — we do not store or manage user private keys. All wallets remain fully user-controlled.
